ALBANY – Although the Senate’s proposal to keep the Dunkirk NRG plant operating is not in the final state budget agreement, Senator Cathy Young is continuing her push to resolve the issue. The Olean Republican said she is introducing stand-alone legislation today that amends the language in the Senate budget resolution passed on March 12, which recommended the New York Power Authority enter into a purchase power agreement with NRG.
The new bill would use the energy that is purchased from NRG to supplement the state’s ReCharge NY program that is designed to retain and create jobs through allocations of low cost power to employers. Senator Young said the Senate has also been in active discussions with Governor Cuomo’s office regarding the future of NRG.
On Monday, NRG officials drove from Western New York to Albany to meet with Senate leaders after they participated in an informational forum with IBEW Local 97 members. Senator Young also says that Assemblyman Andrew Goodell has been lobbying his colleagues to gain their support in his house.
