ALBANY – Gov. Andrew Cuomo on Tuesday presented his $175 billion 2019-20 State budget and Sen. Cathy Young (R-Olean) released a statement following the budget presentation.
Young said her 57th district is focused on taxes, education and jobs and, when listening to the governor’s budget address through that filter, she concedes there were encouraging proposals.
Young said she was glad to hear the governor advocate for making the state’s property tax cap permanent and support the next phase of the historic middle-class tax cuts that the Republican Conference championed in 2018.
For education funding, Young said she was also pleased that the Governor proposed a nearly $1 billion increase in school aid, a 3.6 percent rise over last year. As for Infrastructure, Young said the Governor’s pledge of $4.43 billion for transportation projects is crucial to supporting economic development and job growth.
Young added that the Governor’s address also included proposals that she opposes – including legalizing marijuana and using taxpayer dollars to fund political campaigns.
“At a time when we are facing a $3 billion deficit and many more pressing fiscal priorities, allocating hundreds of millions of dollars for public campaign financing does not make sense,” Young said.
“In the coming days, I will be analyzing the details of this $175 billion spending plan and its impact, both positive and negative, on the hardworking taxpayers that I represent,” Young said. “While the role of the Republican Conference in the budget and legislative process has changed, my commitment to fight for fairness and equity for my district and upstate New York is stronger than ever.”
