Businesses in Salamanca are asking questions after receiving a bill from the Seneca Nation. Merchants recently received packets with applications to the nation’s government to do business on Seneca land, which includes a $150 fee, along with a questionnaire about the business. According to a report in today’s Post-Journal, the mailings drew the ire of some and confused others who had been working to improve relations with the nation. The city is built on land owned by the nation to whom a lease is already paid by non-native American businesses to remain. Nation officials say the laws’ clarification is expected today.
