OFFICIALS TO ANNOUNCE WELFARE TO WORK INITIATIVE TO CLEAN UP THE LAKE
A group of local and state officials will be making a major announcement tomorrow that will benefit Chautauqua Lake as well as the unemployed in Chautauqua Lake. A press announcement from Senator Cathy Young’s Office says she, along with Assemblyman Andrew Goodell and County Executive Greg Edwards, will announce a new Welfare-to-Work Program to benefit Chautauqua Lake Clean-up efforts. Senator Young’s office says this is a new innovative solution that will enable the Chautauqua Lake Association to accomplish much more lake clean-up, will save taxpayers’ dollars, and provide valuable work experience to welfare recipients.
The announcement will take place at 429 E. Terrace Avenue, Lakewood at 2 p.m. Friday.
SALAMANCA BUSINESS QUESTION NEW FEE FROM SENECAS
Businesses in Salamanca are asking questions after receiving a bill from the Seneca Nation. Merchants recently received packets with applications to the nation’s government to do business on Seneca land, which includes a $150 fee, along with a questionnaire about the business. According to a report in today’s Post-Journal, the mailings drew the ire of some and confused others who had been working to improve relations with the nation. The city is built on land owned by the nation to whom a lease is already paid by non-native American businesses to remain. Nation officials say the laws’ clarification is expected today.
SENATOR YOUNG TO HONOR WESTFIELD RESIDENT
Senator Cathy Young will honor Westfield’s Helen Baran, co-owner of Baran Vineyards, President of the Concord Grape Belt Heritage Association, and successful area realtor, with the 2011” Woman of
Distinction,” an honor bestowed by the New York State Senate.
Helen was nominated for the honor by Senator Young who will host a special ceremony attended by family and friends on Thursday at Noble Winery in Westfield. Created in 1998, the Senate’s “Women of Distinction” recognition seeks to honor New York women who exemplify personal excellence or whose
professional achievements or acts of courage, selflessness, integrity or perseverance serve as an example to all New Yorkers.
HIGGINS ANNOUNCES SEPTEMBER ‘CONGRESS ON YOUR CORNER’ IN JAMESTOWN AREA
Congressman Brian Higgins is announcing the September schedule for his Congress on Your Corner program, which provides local residents with access to the Congressman’s office through satellite office hours at locations in the district. The program provides constituents the opportunity to talk directly with someone from Congressman Higgins’ office about issues related to Social Security, the Veteran’s Administration, passports, or other federal matters. Residents are encouraged to visit a satellite site to share their concerns, questions, and ideas with a representative from Congressman Higgins’ office.
Locally, the congress on your corner will take place:
- Friday, September 16 from 1:00 – 3:00pm at the Mayville Community Center.
- Wednesday, September 21 from 9:00 – 11:00am at the Lakewood Village Hall.
- Friday, September 23 from 11:30 – Noon at the Sinclairville Fire Hall.

JAMESTOWN MAYOR AND RECREATION COORDINATOR TO APPEAR ON COMMUNITY MATTERS
And don’t forget that later today right here on WRFA we will have Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi and city Recreation Coordinator Julia Ciesla-Hanley on our Community Matters program, which airs at 6 p.m. The two will discuss the 32nd annual Jamestown Labor Day Festival, taking place this Sunday at Bergman Park. In addition, Mayor Teresi will also offer his thoughts on the governor’s Western New York Economic Development Council, which was recently created to spur development in our region of the state. Teresi is one of three members from Chautauqua County to sit on the panel. Again, Community Matters begins tonight at 6 p.m. right here on WRFA.
