LEGISLATURE COMMITTEE TO CONSIDER LOCAL LAW ON LEGISLATURE SALARIES
A local law involving the salaries of the Chautauqua County Legislature will be the topic of discussion later today in Mayville when the legislature’s Administrative Services Committee Meets. The law, without any additional amendments, would call for members’ annual legislative salary to be $7,000 starting January 1, 2012. In two years, that would increase by more than 28-percent, reaching $9,000 on January 1, 2014.
The law would also call for the Chairman of the legislature to receive $6,000 each year he or she sits at that post. An annual payment of $750 would also go to the legislature’s majority leader and minority leader, and a salary of $375 would go to the assistant majority and minority leader. In addition, each committee chair would receive $750 each year.
Also starting January 1, 2012, no additional compensation would be paid for the position of Ranking Member of Committee.
The A Similar local law was discussed during last month’s full legislature meeting, with County Legislator Maria Kindberg of Jamestown speaking out against it and proposing an amendment that would eliminate the rates. Her amendment was voted down by party lines. The rates in the earlier law were slightly higher than those proposed in the current local law being considered later today.
Also during today’s meeting, lawmakers will also discuss occupancy tax collection and enforcement.
Today’s Administrative Services Committee will meet at 5:30 p.m. in Room 331 of the Gerace Office Building.
In addition to the Adminstrative Services COmmitttee, the legislature’s Public Facilities Committee will also meet today at 4 p.m. Among the items on its agenda is a report from the airport task force.
CITY RESIDENT FACES CHARGES AFTER SUNDAY MORNING ACCIDENT IN FINDLEY LAKE
A Jamestown man faces several charges, including DWI, after getting into a property damage accident early Sunday morning near Findley Lake. Sheriff Deputies say 40 year old Brent Nelson crashed his car into a house on Marks Corners Road in the Town of French Creek just after 2 a.m. Sunday. Following an investigation, it was determined that Nelson was operating car at a high rate of speed when he left the roadway and crashed into the front porch of a residence. The car then side swiped a utility pole and traveled a significant distance before crashing into a creek bed. Nelson was charged with DWI, B.A.C. of .08-percent or greater, Speed not reasonable and prudent, and Moving from lane unsafely. No injuries were reported and Nelson will appear in French Creek Town Court later.
SINCLAIRVILLE RESIDENT SENT TO BROOKS MEMORIAL HOSPITAL FOR INJURIES
A Sinclairville man was sent to Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk last night after getting into a one-vehicle accident in the town of Stockton. Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Deputies say 25 year old Aaron Brown was driving south along Rout 380 in Stockton about 9 p.m. last night when lost control of his car. Brown reportedly went off the side of the roadway, struck a sign, and then went into a ditch. The Stockton Fire Department and ALSTAR responded to the scene and Brown was taken to Brooks for unreported injuries. The accident remains under investigation.
UPCOMING JACKSON CENTER FORUM TO FOCUS ON BUFFALO SABRES SALES
The Robert H. Jackson Center will host a free continuing legal education seminar titled, “The Anatomy of the Buffalo Sabres” on Tuesday, November 1, 2011 at 8 p.m. A variety of speakers will be featured including principal speaker Ted Black, president of the Buffalo Sabres, and guest luncheon speaker Danny Gare former long-time member of the Buffalo Sabres.
Developed primarily as a continuing legal education seminar for attorneys, the seminar will appeal to a cross- disciplinary audience of lawyers, municipal officials, business leaders, bankers, accountants, financial planners, insurance and investment agencies, non-profit organizations and their board members. The program is approved for NYS CLE credit for both newly admitted and experienced attorneys for a maximum of 4.0 credit hours (professional practice).
