LANCASTER MAN INJURED ON CHAUTAUQUA LAKE
STOW, N.Y. – A Lancaster, N.Y. man suffered a serious head injury Friday when his friend crashed a personal watercraft into the dock he was standing on at Lakeside Campground in Hadley Bay on Chautauqua Lake. The Chautauqua County Sheriff’s Office reports Craig Dulak, 43, of West Seneca was test-driving a personal watercraft, owned by Donald Hayes, 47, of Lancaster. Dulak was apparently going too fast and could not turn or stop the watercraft and ended up crashing into the dock where Hayes was standing. The dock collapsed and Hayes fell, striking his head on the front cleat of a moored pontoon boat. Hayes was transported to WCA Hospital by Ashville Rescue.
COUPLE CONSIDERS LEASING SPACE IN AIRPORT
MAYVILLE – A local couple is looking into opening a new business at the Chautauqua County Airport. The Post-Journal is reporting this morning that county lawmakers will consider leasing space at the airport in Jamestown to a new restaurant business. The prospective tenants – Teel Wolcott and her husband – already operate the Backyard Bar & Grill in Kimball Stand. According to the article, the couple would rely more on local business from various snowmobile clubs, rather than from passengers and employees who use the airport. Rent for the facilities would be $600 per month, with the lease covering a term of one year beginning on or about Sept. 1. A public hearing on a tentative lease agreement is scheduled for 6:45 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 24, prior to the monthly voting session.
FORMER GOVERNOR CAREY DIES
SHELTER ISLAND, N.Y. – Former New York Governor Hugh Carey died Sunday at his summer home on Shelter Island. Carey is best remembered for steering the state – especially New York City – through a major financial and economic crisis during the 1970s. When sworn in on January 1, 1975, the liberal democrat had inherited the worst economic climate since the Great Depression and New York City was nearing bankruptcy. Famously declaring the “days of wine and roses are over,” the well-to-do son of an entrepreneur rose to the challenge, forced major changes in the way New York governed and financed itself, and stared down a Republican president to keep New York City from insolvency. He died on Sunday at the age of 92.
