GOVERNOR ANNOUNCES 9/11 MEMORIAL IN JAMESTOWN, ACROSS STATE
ALBANY, N.Y. – A memorial marking the 10th anniversary of September 11, 2001 will be on display in Jamestown at the end of this month. The announcement was made yesterday by Governor Andrew Cuomo, who said that Jamestown is one of 30 locations that will host an exhibit entitled “New York Remembers.”
The exhibition will open on Aug. 29 at Jamestown’s city hall and will provide area residents an opportunity to remember the victims, and also pay tribute to the countless heroes who came from all corners of the state to help in the clean-up and recovery efforts. It will feature historical artifacts – many of which have never been seen by the public – from the collections of the State Museum and National September 11 Memorial and Museum. The exhibit will remain open for two weeks, up through September 11, 2011.
ERIE-LACKAWANNA TRAIN STATION FOCUS ON ‘COMMUNITY MATTERS’
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – The effort to renovate the Erie-Lackawanna Train Station is moving forward. That from City of Jamestown project engineer Mark Schlemmer and Downtown Jamestown Development Corporation Executive Director Lee Harkness. Not only will the project help to preserve a piece of Jamestown’s history, but it will also serve as a hub for travel, including foot traffic between the downtown and the Riverwalk project, along with the CARTS busing system. In addition, there is potential for passenger train service.
Both Schlemer and Harkness were able to sit down with WRFA and discuss the project in depth yesterday afternoon. The complete interview will be broadcast later today on WRFA’s Community Matters program, which begins at 6 p.m.
LOCAL COUPLE TO REPURPOSE HISTORIC DOWNTOWN CHURCH
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – A local couple is spearheading the effort to renovate and repurpose the First Congregational Church on East 3rd Street in Jamestown in to a mulit-purpose arts and performance facility. Angelo and Ylsa Giuffre are teaming up with the DJDC and plan to turn the church into what will be known as “The Spire of Jamestown.”
Giuffre says they hope the facility will help to fill in gaps between other arts based organizations such as Infinity and the Arts Council – as well as work together with them and other organizations – to help local artists find ways to flourish in the community. The first fundraiser, known as the AHA Festival, will take place on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 2 to 9 p.m. The DJDC is sponsoring the organization until it has official 5o1-c3 status and is co-presenting the festival.
JAMESTOWN SALVATION ARMY ANNOUNCES NEW MAJORS
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – There’s a new couple in charge of running one of the largest charities in Chautauqua County. The Post-Journal is reporting this morning that Major Doug Hart and Major Judy Hart will be taking over as new majors of the Jamestown Salvation Army. The Harts follow in the retirement of Majors Richard Best and Jody Best. The Harts arrived in Jamestown in June from Hartford, Conn., where they were stationed as corps officers for the Hartford Citadel and as the greater Hartford area coordinators.
BICENTENNIAL HISTORY FAIR TO FEATURE JAMESTOWN PHOTOGRAPHER
MAYVILLE, N.Y. – One of the most prolific photographers in the history of Chautauqua County will be featured in an exhibit being show at this weekends Bicentennial History Fair in Mayville. The Chautauqua County Historical Society plans to present ten 16-by-20-inch sepia prints by noted photographer John Oliver Bowman (1884-1977). Bowman won national recognition as a photographer during his lifetime. Bowman achieved award-winning work with a simple Kodak box. In 1946, Collier’s Magazine declared Bowman the undisputed box camera champion of the universe.
The Bicentennial History Fair celebrates Chautauqua County’s rich and vibrant history by bringing together 56 organizations that work to preserve and promote local history. The History Fair will take place at Chautauqua Suites Conference Center on Route 394 in Mayville, on Saturday, Aug. 13 from 10 a.m.- 8 p.m. and Sunday, Aug. 14 from 10 a.m. – 4 p.m. Admission is free.
MAYOR ANNOUNCES WALKING TOUR THIS EVENING
JAMESTOWN, N.Y. – Jamestown Mayor Sam Teresi has rescheduled his Huxley Street Walking Tour to today at 6:30 p.m. The tour was postponed from last week due to rain. The door-to-door visits provide a unique opportunity for residents to meet face-to-face with the Mayor to discuss concerns and ideas about their neighborhoods.
