WARREN – Bacterial contamination is being blamed for a food poisoning incident at a Mighty Taco restaurant in Buffalo and it’s been traced back to a food processing company in Warren, PA.
Erie County Department of Health officials say more than 140 people suffered from nausea and vomiting after consuming refried beans from a Mighty Taco location in Erie County between the dates of Sept. 6 and Oct. 6, 2016.
State health officials said Monday they had isolated Bacillus cereus in samples of refried beans collected from Mighty Taco locations as well as in lab samples submitted by sick people. Those refried beans reportedly came from Pellegrino Food Products Co., based in Warren.
The Pellegrino Food Products told a Buffalo television station that it takes food safety issues very seriously, and that so far no root cause has yet been determined of the reported illnesses. However, they are continuing to work with health officials to identify any connection to the illness.
