ALBANY – New York State is continuing its effort to crack down on the sale and use of Heroin and other opioids.
On Wednesday, Governor Andrew Cuomo announced that the State Police plans to hire 100 investigators for its narcotics unit (CNET) in order to combat the rise of heroin use. The additional would reportedly double the size of the Narcotics Enforcement Team.
Additionally, the State will launch an unprecedented effort to make supplies of naloxone, a leading overdose antidote, available to all first responder units in the State. The Governor also announced a targeted awareness campaign that will take place on all on all public college and university campuses.
The state Legislature is also considering a series of bills to address the heroin scourge. Earlier this week the Senate passed 23 heroin-related bills that are now awaiting passage in the assembly.
In 2013, New York Hospitals saw more than 89,000 cases of heroin and prescription treatment admissions… an increase of more than 25,000 in just nine years.
