STOW – The Chautauqua Lake and Watershed Management Alliance held its monthly meeting on Thursday and residents and officials called for unity in the effort to battle invasive weeds.
According to the Jamestown Post-Journal, several people were on hand for the meeting, including alliance board member Chautauqua County Executive George Borrello – who said that herbicides can be one tool to treat Chautauqua Lake’s problems, but a comprehensive plan is needed most.
The issue of a lawsuit filed by Chautauqua Institution against the State DEC and town of Ellery was also brought up. The Institution filed the lawsuit, stating that more environmental review should have been done before the DEC allowed a small portion of the lack to be treated with herbicides in June.
Some of those on hand for Thursday’s meeting said the alliance should have been more involved with mediation between opposing sides in order to prevent litigation.
