MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Executive Greg Edwards and members of his development administration are recognizing two local businesses for using alternative energy sources and also working toward reducing energy consumption.
Earlier this week, Edwards announced that he has given the County Executive’s Award for Innovative Energy Initiatives to the Jamestown Engine Plant of Cummins Inc.
Cummins is currently involved in a corporate wide commitment to reduce their energy intensity over five years by 27 percent. The new improvements being made to Cummins Engine Plant are part of the Better Buildings Challenge of the U.S. Department of Energy. The plant is getting a full upgrade of their air handling/HVAC systems, which will result in a major savings in energy usage.
At the same time, they are doing a complete replacement of the roof, which is almost 1,000,000 square feet in area. The roof insulation will be dramatically improved from R3 to R20, and they’re also installing a white granulated top to reduce summer heat gain. All work is being done by local contractors.
In addition to Cummins, Edwards and his staff also presented an award to HPW Energy, located at the Barcelona Market and Café in the town of Westfield. HPW Energy was recognized for providing compressed natural gas for trucks and cars.
Awards for Innovative Energy Initiatives are presented annually in conjunction with the Chautauqua County Energy Conference & Expo. This year’s conference and expo is being held on Friday, November 1 from noon to 5 p.m. and on Saturday, November 2 from 10 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. at Chautauqua Suites & Expo Center, in Mayville, NY.
