POMFRET – A north county accident apparently caused by driving too fast on a slippery roadway has claimed the life of a woman from Australia.
According to New York State Police in Fredonia, the three-vehicle crash took place Monday afternoon on Route 60 just south of Shumla Rd. in the town of Pomfret. Investigators say 49 year-old Carolanne Boulionis of Melbourne, Australia was driving a pickup north on Route 60 when she lost control of her vehicle due to driving too fast for road conditions. Boulionis’ truck then went into the oncoming lane and hit an oncoming semi driven by 50 year-old Matthew Wick of Cattaraugus. A third vehicle, driven by 32 year-old Alexander Thurston of Silver Creek, was traveling behind Wick’s vehicle and also sustained damage in the crash.
Boulionis was transported to Brooks Memorial Hospital in Dunkirk where she was pronounced dead. Wick, who was complaining of chest pain, was also taken to the hospital. Thurston was not injured.
State Police say that Carolanne Boulionis was in the U.S. as a visitor for the past four to five weeks, living in Jamestown.
