JAMESTOWN – Mayor Sam Teresi is hoping Jamestown will get more highway funding from the state.
On Monday night the mayor updated the Jamestown City Council on an effort put forward by the New York State Conference of Mayor (NYCOM), requesting the state increase the reimbursement rate under the State Highway Maintenance Agreement, which provides funding to cities for helping to maintain state roadways that run through the municipalities.
Currently, cities receive 85 cents per square yard, which equals about $205,000 for the city of Jamestown. However, that amount hasn’t gone up since 1987 – and NYCOM officials believe it’s time the state finally get the number to where it should be as a result of inflation. Teresi said the rate should instead be about $1.77 per square yard, meaning an additional $210,000 in funding for the city.
Teresi, along with other mayors across the state, are now asking the state legislature to increase the rate before they finalize the 2017-18 State budget, which is due on April 1.
