MAYVILLE – The Anthony Robert Taglianetti murder trial is now underway in Mayville.
On Tuesday, both District Attorney David Foley and Public Defender Ned Barone made opening statements in the case. Foley said that the county has compiled plenty of evidence against Taglianetti and can prove that he killed Keith Reed Jr. in September 2012. At the time, Reed was the Superintendent for the Clymer Central School district.
Prosecutors believe Taglianetti shot and killed Reed the night of Sept. 21, 2012. He’s accused of allegedly driving from his home in Virginia to Clymer, N.Y. to confront Reed for having an online affair with his wife. Following an investigation and brief manhunt, Taglianetti was arrested a few days later.
Among the evidence is a bank statement from Taglianetti’s Virginia-based bank found at the Crime Scene, along with the gun believed to be used to kill Reed, wrapped in a paper-copy email exchange between Reed and Taglianetti’s wife. The gun also contained traces of Reed’s blood.
Barone, meanwhile, stated that Taglianetti was a hard working family man who was manipulated by a lying and promiscuous spouse, who was trying to rekindle a previous affair with Reed, whom she had met a couple of years earlier.
Following opening statements, a dozen witnesses took the stand, including Reed’s daughter Allison, who broke down in tears as she talked about her relationship with her dad, and how she was with him the day he was shot. Reed’s next-door neighbors also testified, along with Clymer principal Ed Bailey and the Chautauqua County Sheriff’s deputy who eventually discovered Reed’s body.
Testimony is expected to continue Wednesday morning.
