ALBANY – The State Legislature was supposed to have wrapped up its 2015 session last week, but lawmakers have decided to extend the session in order to take care of some last-minute, key issues.
On Tuesday, Governor Cuomo joined legislative leaders to announce that they have reached a tentative agreement a plan to address those issues, which include rent control in New York City, as well as extending the 2 percent property tax cap. The effort by the governor and assembly to raise the age of criminal responsibility to 18 did not make it into the final deal.
Also included in the framework deal are several pieces of legislation dealing with local issues, including the county’s effort to raise sales tax by half-a-percent. The state senate has already approved the request during a vote last week, but the vote was delayed in the Assembly. Assembly members will take up the issue today when they vote on the packaged deal that was announced Tuesday by state leaders.
