JAMESTOWN – It appears Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) won’t have to run in a primary election for the GOP endorsement.
According to the Elmira Gazette – the New York State Board of Elections is currently reviewing the petitions submitted by Gary Perry to run as a candidate for the state’s 23rd Congressional District on the Republican ticket.
Election law requires that any candidate wishing to run in the Republican Party congressional primary submit at least 1250 valid Republican signatures on a petition. Two men who’ve challenged Perry’s petition claim that he filed fewer than 800 signatures.
The Board of Elections is expected to rule on the objections this week.
Perry is a Tioga County resident who works with the tea party in that area of the state. He announced in March that he was challenging Reed to appear on the Republican Party ballot in November.
The state primary for all federal offices (not including president) is scheduled for June 28.
Reed is also being challenged by Democrat John Plumb in the general election.
