JAMESTOWN – Residents in southern Chautauqua County and the rest of the country are being encouraged to help stamp out hunger this week.
Every second Saturday in May, letter carriers in more than 10,000 cities and towns across America collect non-perishable items from their postal customers, who participate in the Stamp Out Hunger National Food Drive – the largest one-day food drive in the nation.
On Saturday, May 14 local letter carriers will collect non-perishable food donations left by mailboxes and in post offices and deliver them to local community food banks, pantries, and shelters. In the Jamestown area, all food collected will go to the Salvation Army food pantry.
Local carrier and post office representative Tim Walters says the goal for this year is to collect 10,000 pounds of food from Jamestown area residents.
Salvation Army of Jamestown is the largest food pantry in Chautauqua County. The food pantry provides 3-5 days of food each month for pantry clients.
To donate, place a box or can of non-perishable food next to your home mailbox before your letter carrier delivers mail on Saturday. The carrier will do the rest.
