JAMESTOWN – The St. Susan Center will have yet another initiative in place to help it in its mission of serving the hungry in the Jamestown area. Yesterday, staff of the city soup kitchen joined with administrators of the Creating Healthy Places Initiative to thank local residents who will be taking part in the 1st annual Giving Garden project this year.
“Giving Garden is a volunteer program where we’re asking community members to volunteer their time and water to grow gardens and then donate the produce back to the St. Susan Center,” explains St. Susan Center Volunteer Coordinator Karen Brown. “So we’re really thrilled to have so many people in the community who love gardening so much and are willing to donate their time and talent to the St. Susan Center.”
Brown said that while the time and effort it takes to grow a garden is provided by the volunteers, growing supplies have been provided to volunteers through a Giving Garden Tool Kits which include items such as seeds, seedlings, growing containers, tomato cages and garden tools. The supplies are provided by through a grant from the Creating Healthy Places initiative.
Saint Susan Center serves, on average, more than 300 meals each day. Its doors are open Monday – Friday from 11am to 4pm and Saturday and Sunday from 1:30pm to 3:30pm. For more information visit St. Susan Center on- line at www.stsusancenter.org.
