A sidewalk plowing program between the City of Jamestown and Jamestown Public Schools will move forward this winter.
Interim DPW and Parks Director Mark Roetzer informed City Council that the two new sidewalk plows that the school district purchased were recently delivered to the city. He said the two seasonal employees needed to operate the plows also have been hired.
In 2022, the City and Jamestown Public Schools District entered into a shared services agreement that had the district paying $250,000 toward two sidewalk plows. The City used American Rescue Plan funds to pay $56,000 toward the plows. The cost for the plows was $306,000. The agreement also included the City paying for two Parks Laborers that are estimated to cost $689,672 over a four year period between August 2022 and the end of 2026. They also would be funded using American Rescue Plan monies.
Roetzer presented the proposed DPW and Parks budgets to City Council at a budget hearing Monday night.
Notable items include the addition of two park laborers, which would bring the number of park laborers from 15 to 17. The Parks Department also has requested a Parks Operation Assistant at a salary of $40,000. This position would assist with park facility reservations, overseeing baseball and softball leagues; and helping with billing in the Parks Department.
Under DPW, proposed capital projects include $800,000 to replace a culvert that runs from Camp Street to the Chadakoin River. Roetzer said the pipe is badly deteriorated and has failed in two different locations over the last three years. He said the culvert currently runs underneath part of the Gateway Center building and this project would relocate it away from that structure.
Another project would reconstruct 700 feet of a retaining wall on North Main Street by the cemetery for a cost of $120,000.
The Police and Fire Departments will present their budgets at 6:00 p.m., Monday, October 30 ahead of Council’s monthly voting session.
