CORNING – Congressional candidate Nate Shinagawa is calling on Congress and Tom Reed to stop student loan interest rates from doubling on July 1 – raising costs for 7 million students and their families. In a statement released late last week, the Tompkins County democrat said Republicans’ failure to act would cost New Yorkers with student loans over $340 million. Two-thirds of all college students graduate with student loan debt and the average college graduate has $25,000 in student loan debt. Shinagawa is scheduled to speak at a student debt rally at Corning Community College later today.
Shinagawa is one of three democrats running for Congress in the newly created 23rd Congressional District.
