MAYVILLE – Chautauqua County Sheriff Joseph Gerace is warning County residents to be cautious of recent telephone-based scams in the county.
One of those scams is called the “Grandparent Scam” which involves a phone call from someone pretending to be a grandchild or other relative who is in need of emergency assistance.
Someone will pretend to be a lawyer, police officer or judge and will come on the line and direct the victim to Western Union, MoneyGram or request they purchase an iTunes.
The sheriff says that if you receive a call similar to this, please hang up on them. You can call your local law enforcement agency for assistance.
