MAYVILLE – The Chautauqua County Jail has a new member on its staff to help with locating prison contraband.
Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace says a new K-9 has joined to staff at the jail. He says Laelaps is a flat-coated female retriever who graduated from Caroline-A Police Academy. After arriving at the Sheriff’s office in the spring of 2015, Correction Officer Amanda Dando was assigned as the handler for Laelaps and the two recently completed the “Police Narcotics Detection Canine Course.”
Laelaps is trained to detect drugs and drug paraphernalia as well as hand-fashioned or homemade weapons.
Now that training is complete, Laelaps will focus on finding illegal drugs and other contraband within the county jail. Specifically, she’ll specialize in searching the inmate visitors and visiting rooms before, during, and after all contact visits.
