ALBANY – Seven new laws aimed at protecting women’s rights officially took effect in New York State on Tuesday. The provisions are part of the Women’s Equality Act. The new laws prohibit wage, housing and employment discrimination and strengthen the state’s anti-human trafficking laws.
Employers are now required to provide reasonable accommodations to women who are pregnant or nursing and cannot deny promotions based on family status.
Seven of the eight provisions in the law took effect Tuesday. The eighth measure, which deals with protecting domestic violence victims, goes into effect in April.
