CLINTON COUNTY, NY – Communities across northern New York State are breathing a sigh of relief Monday after authorities were able to capture the second of two men who escaped from the Clinton Correctional Facility more than three weeks ago.
According to State Police, escaped inmate David Sweat was spotted walking down a roadway in the Town of Constable at about 2:30 Sunday afternoon. Police say Sweat made an attempt to run back into the woods and at that time, a state trooper was able to shoot and injure Sweat and bring him into custody alive. He was then taken to a local hospital for treatment of his injuries.
Sweat was captured about 16 miles north of the location where fellow escapee Richard Matt was killed on Friday afternoon.
Law enforcement finally closed in on Matt when police received a call of shots fired near Route 30 in the vicinity of Malone, New York. Federal officers searching the area found Matt — armed with a 20-gauge shotgun. He was shot dead after failing to comply with verbal commands to put his hands up.
The search for the two men lasted three weeks and has already led to the arrest of two prison employees who were charged for allegedly helping the two men escape. The investigation into the escape continues.
