WASHINGTON – The price of eggs in supermarkets across the country and here in New York continues to climb and as a result, U.S. Senator Charles Schumer wants to do something about it.
Wednesday afternoon New York’s senior senator will discuss increasing egg prices due to the recent Bird Flu outbreak, which caused the culling of millions of birds and a shortage in the overall egg supply.
Schumer will urge Congress to stop a proposed $500 million cut to crucial United States Department of Agriculture (USDA) research funding. Schumer says the funds provide essential resources to farmers and scientists as they look to beat back threats like Bird Flu.
Schumer believes the proposed slash to USDA research funding will restrain the ability of the agency to combat bird flu and other diseases, which could further increase egg prices for both New York State consumers and small businesses, like bakeries and restaurants.
