GERRY – More than 20 students from Dunkirk High School had a close call Monday afternoon after the bus they were riding in was involved in an accident on Route 60 in the town of Gerry.
According to New York State Police, the accident took place yesterday afternoon around 4 p.m. when a bus carrying members of the Dunkirk girls’ varsity track team collided with the driver’s side of a Chevrolet Blazer on Route 60. Both vehicles were traveling south at the time when the Blazer, driven by a 16 year-old, slowed down to turn into a private driveway. The bus, driven by 54 year old John Logsdon, was unable to stop in time, causing the collision.
Emergency crews had used the jaws of life to get the teenage driver out of the blazer. She was then taken by Starflight to the Hamot Medical Center in Erie for treatment of a broken wrist, thumb and a concussion. A male passenger in the vehicle, along with Logsdon, were also taken to area hospitals for observation.
There were 22 students on the bus at the time and all were taken to WCA and Brook Memorial Hospital as a precautionary measure, although it was later found out that none suffered serious injury.
Emergency crews from 10 area volunteer fire departments assisted at the scene and a portion of Route 60 was shut down and traffic rerouted while crews responded to the scene. Police are continuing the investigation.
