ALBANY – Lawmakers have finally reached a consensus this week on legislation to curb the practice of “revenge porn.”
The proposal approved on Thursday will make it a crime to share sexually explicit photos or videos on the internet with the intent to cause harm to another person, while also giving victims the ability to pursue a civil lawsuit and legal authority to have the content removed.
Revenge porn can lead to victims being threatened with sexual assault, stalking, harassment and job termination, and can cause some to commit suicide or have trouble forming new relationships.
The new legislation makes New York the 42nd state to regulate the issue and comes after five years of back and forth negotiations.
