WASHINGTON – Congressmen Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY 23) is clarifying his recent criticism of Democratic Challenger John Plumb (D-Jamestown).
Last week Reed criticized Plumb, a Randolph, NY native, for only recently moving back into the 23 congressional district in order to run for Congress, adding that his home in Lakewood was actually his secondary residence. Reed’s campaign added that Plumb’s primary residence is in Washington DC, pointing out that Plumb is more connected to Washington DC than to the residents in the district.
Plumb responded by pointing out his residence in DC was due to his work in the defense department, saying it was part of his military service to the country. He also criticized Reed for attacking his service to the country.
On Monday during a conference call with regional media, Reed clarified his criticism by saying he respects Plumb’s service in the Navy, but added that his work in the Defense Department was a political job and shouldn’t be confused with military service to the country.
“When you’re working on a political office for Sen. Ken Salazar or for the chief foreign policy advisor for President Obama, those are more political in nature so we’re just trying to make a distinction between the two,” Reed said. “I respect the six years of service and in the military.”
Reed also said Plumb should be more upfront about his service. “Just tell people what your work was, where you stand on the issues. That’s all we’re looking for.”
According to Plumb’s website, he was commissioned as an officer in the U.S. Navy, and spent over six years on active duty. His service with the Navy Reserves is ongoing.
He then worked in the Senate as a military legislative assistant, followed by a position in the Department of Defense as principal director of nuclear and missile defense policy and on the National Security Council in the role of director of defense policy and strategy, taking a one-year break to deploy to Kuwait, supporting Operation Enduring Freedom.
