WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Reed says its time to investigate why gasoline prices remain relatively high, considering the price of crude oil has continued to plunge in recent months.
On Monday the Corning Republican held is weekly conference call with regional media, and used it as an opportunity to rail against unfair gas prices.
“We intend to put questions to the secretary of energy to explain why we’re not seeing benefits to the extend that we can per gallon costs at the pump as a result of those all-time low oil prices on the world market,” Reed said.
Reed said currently, gas prices are lower, compared to where they had been earlier this year and even last year. However, he said that with oil prices at record low prices, the average price for a gallon of gas could be as low as $2.00/gallon. Currently, the average is $2.74/gallon in the Chautauqua region.
He’s open that by drawing attention to the issue, he may be able to help local motorists see even further savings at the pump in the coming months.
“My hope is by spotlighting this issue others will join in on raising the question,” Reed said. “When you raise that spotlight, sometimes – maybe if there’s something going on – that corrects it in and of itself, but we just don’t know that now. I am raising the question because I think it’s the right and fair question to ask. American consumers demand, in my opinion, that we raise these questions so that they can have the benefit of lower prices at the pump going forward.”
Reed also continued his call to work toward domestic energy independence by calling for an all-of-the-above approach to creating domestic energy – not just oil and natural gas, but also wind, solar and even nuclear. Reed said America can eliminate its need for Middle Eastern crude oil but, only over time until the next big energy source is developed.
