WASHINGTON – Congressman Tom Reed (R-Corning, NY-23) led a group of his colleagues in recognizing the month of April as Sexual Assault Awareness Month. Reed was recently joined by a bipartisan group of members on the House floor that spoke out about the need to stop putting blame on victims, encourage defenders to speak out and stand up to abusers.
Reed introduced a resolution in the House of Representatives to recognize the month of April as a special opportunity to educate the public about sexual violence and encourage prevention, treatment of victims and prosecution of abusers. Congresswoman Gwen Moore of Wisconsin joined Reed to lead on the resolution.
In March, Reed said that sexual assault was a very personal issue for him and his family, revealing that he has a niece who was recently the victim of sexual assault. Since sharing his family’s experience, the southern tier congressman has taken the lead in the House to bring sexual assault awareness to the forefront at the national level.
Reed continues to meet with sexual assault awareness and prevention groups including RAINN (Rape, Abuse and Incest National Network), National Alliance to End Sexual Assault, National Resource Center on Domestic Violence, Joyful Heart Foundation and NO MORE to see how best to partner to promote their shared goal of educating the public.
He is also speaking out against sexual violence in a new blog post that recently appeared in the Huffington Post.
