It appears New York State will be moving forward with redrawing and reducing the traffic lanes on the Third Street Bridge.
A public information session on the proposed plan was held Monday Night at City Hall, with eight individuals speaking – each of them voicing support for the plan.
City DPW director Jeff Lehman says last night’s meeting was merely a formality, with officials from the New York State Department of Transportation already committed to redrawing the traffic lanes.
“It went over very positive. I don’t think we had anyone in the audience who was against it. Everybody thought it was a great idea,” Lehman said. “It’s a go, so we’ll be going back to the shop to get the work order in and the striping done.”
Lehman says that at this point it’s not known exactly when the state will redraw the lanes, although it could be completed by the end of this year – depending on the weather and the remaining DOT project schedule.
The plan calls for changing the traffic lanes across the bridge from four lanes to two, with the addition of center median along with two 8-ft bicycle lanes on either city.
The redesign is part of the complete streets movement, which focuses on developing roadways that are safe and convenient for all travelers, not just those in motor vehicles.
