JAMESTOWN – The James Prendergast Library Board of Directors will be holding a special meeting this afternoon. According to board president Tom Price, the meeting has been scheduled to discuss sensitive issues, and the board will be in executive session for most of the meeting.
According to state law, a library board may convene an executive session only during an open meeting for a limited number of specific purposes. They include discussions regarding proposed, pending or current litigation; Collective bargaining; particular personnel issues; or the proposed acquisition, sale or lease of property.
It is inappropriate and illegal for a library board to use executive sessions to discuss matters with which they feel uncomfortable in a public setting – yet are not defined within the law.
Today’s special meeting will begin at 12:15 p.m. in the Fireplace Room of the James Prendergast Library.
