The James Prendergast Library board of directors held a lengthy meeting on Thursday afternoon, with a variety of issues being discussed. In addition, the board also received a presentation from the Habiterra architect firm, which offered some ideas on how it would help to redesign the Children’s Room at the library along with upgrading bathroom facilities.
Following the presentation from Haibiterra, the board approved moving forward with paying the firm a total of $3750 to draw up plans for renovation work. Officials from Habiterra said the cost of a renovation project for the bathrooms could cost as much as $125,000. They added the children’s room renovations could also be anywhere from $200,000 up to as much as $1,000,000 – depending on how much work the board wanted to have done. While the board is moving forward with having plans drawn up, it was made clear that the board would not move forward with any potential renovation project unless there was adequate funding in place.
The board also continued to hear concerns from the public, including one brought forward by resident Mike Flaxman, who urged the library board to make sure it is in compliance with state regulations and post the library whistle blower policy throughout the building and make all employees aware of the policy. Flaxman is concerned that some employees in the library are unaware of what procedure to follow if they have a concern with a supervisor or given task.
The next library board meeting will take place at 12:15 on May 17.
