JAMESTOWN – The Jamestown Police Department is currently investigating a fraud complaint for an incident that took place over the course of several weeks.
According to city police, the perpetrators represented themselves as agents for publishers clearing house. After gaining the confidence of the elderly victim, the victim was asked to send money to different locations to cover for taxes and fees regarding cash and prizes that were coming to her.
Contact was made to the victim by phone from an 876 area code, which is based out of Jamaica. Contact was also made through the mail. According to police, the victim reportedly gave several thousand dollars to the perpetrators as a result of the scam.
Publishers Clearing House does not notify winners via telephone calls or through any social media or email. The official also stated they do not ever ask for money to be sent to them for any taxes or fees.
The Jamestown Police suggest that any information people receive about winning prizes be closely scrutinized. It is very likely anyone asking for money to be sent out or for personal information is a part of a scam.
