JAMESTOWN – Jamestown Police have shot and killed an unleashed dog in the city after it reportedly charged at an officer in a threatening manner.
Police captain Robert Samuelson said the incident occurred shortly before 2 p.m. Wednesday as two officers were attempting to locate a resident at 222 Winsor St. wanted on an outstanding warrant.
When officers approached the home from the sidewalk, Samuelson said a large uncollared pitbull-Mastiff “aggressively” charged the pair.
Samuelson said an officer was forced to shoot the dog with his service weapon in order to stop the imminent attack and that footage – described as graphic – of the incident confirms the account from the police officer (posted below).
The dog was taken to a local veterinarian office where it died. No person was reported injured in the shooting.
The dog’s owner was issued a summons that includes a $50 fine for having a dog at-large that attacks.
It’s the first known shooting of a pet in the city by police since August 2015, when a sheriff deputy shot and killed a boxer that was left loose by its owner while attempting to serve papers.
