ALBANY – Staff from New York State Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli’s office will attend community events around the state to help residents search for lost and forgotten money, also known as unclaimed funds.
DiNapoli oversees 33 million unclaimed funds accounts valued at $14 billion until the money can be returned to its rightful owners. Chautauqua County alone has more than 27,000 unclaimed funds totaling more than $10,000,000.
The unclaimed funds come from old bank accounts, utility deposits, uncashed checks, insurance claims, stocks and other sources that have been dormant for a number of years. Some accounts hold money that has been lost and forgotten since the 1940s.
The comptroller’s office will have a representative at the Erie County Fair (Aug. 10 – 21) to help residents find out if they are owed money. Residents who cannot make it to the events can search for and claim their money by using the online claiming system or by calling 1-800-221-9311.

My father has a claim and he has pasted away a long time ago. I am his daughter and have his death announcement from the paper which shows his address and my name as daughter. Is that enough proof to make a claim. We have no other proof as it has been along time ago..
