NYS SNAP Recipients May Now Use Benefits for Prepared or Hot Food

October 7, 2021 By WRFA Radio 23 Comments

Governor Kathy Hochul has signed legislation establishing a statewide Restaurant Meals Program as part of the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program, or SNAP.

The legislation mandates the New York State Office of Temporary and Disability Assistance to apply for USDA approval to authorize the program, which would allow homeless, elderly and disabled SNAP recipients to use their benefits for prepared or hot food from participating restaurants.

The Governor also announced the launch of the $25 million Restaurant Resiliency Program to provide relief to the restaurant industry, which continues to face severe challenges from the COVID-19 pandemic.

The program, proposed by the legislature, will build on the Nourish New York initiative. It will provide funding to New York’s network of food banks and emergency food providers to purchase prepared meals from New York restaurants and deliver them to families in need.

I wish there was a like button for your comment. I’ve worked my butt off for 28 and got laid off. For the first time after raising kids and helping others, I had to ask for help. Things just spiral so quickly. EVERYONE deserves to eat and EVERYONE deserves a day where they don’t have to cook food or to have something they just don’t know how to make. As I mentioned, I can eat for three days off of one meal at the Dominican restaurant by my house. $12. It’s a good deal. It’s the same $12 I’d be cooking at home, no gas bill or water bill either!

I can attest to that. Sometimes I go out and I get hungry. Do I have to wait until I reach home to eat? Although I love cooking my own, once in a while should be okay to eat out. There should be a limit on the amount of times you are allowed to buy hot food outside from those restaurants chosen by SNAP officials.

It’s true, sometimes you need a break from the kitchen. And its difficult to go out with small children that see a McDonald’s or Popeyes and you have to tell them no because all you have is an EBT. I cook for my kids everyday but they also deserve to have cheat days as a luxury once in a blue. I work my but off but I’m so focused on paying bills and the necessities, I don’t have the option to do anything else and it s**ks

That’s just ignorant. I worked a job 28 and lost my job and I had no idea that people who got SNAP couldn’t get hot food. There are days where we’re all very busy, or sick, or just plain tired and need a hot meal that we do not cook ourselves. It’s because women are the backbone and everyone is stuck in the 50s and think women should cook every night. I fully support hot meals now that I get snap. Sometimes the Dominican place by me feeds me for 3 days on one meal.

Ignorance is thinking this is a women’s issue. The point of EBT is for proper nutrition. The only person saying it’s o knock on women and some 50s mentality is you. Stop making excuses and get outa u’re own way jeez

Some of us, although worked all our lives, still are taxpayers but disabled. Having access to hot/prepared meals under SNAP would truly be a lifesaver.

I can understand why hot foods are not permissible for SNAP recipients. There are people who are diabetics, those who have heart conditions, those with high cholesterol and other diseases who should follow a strict diet. But many restaurants don’t prepare specialty foods. So by eating any foods that will worsen our health SNAP is trying to prevent. It will defeat the purpose SNAP is trying to encourage. SNAP choosing restaurants preparing healthy meals is the right way to go.
