SHERMAN, NY – Two people from New York City are in the county jail following a high speed chase that took place Sunday on I-86.
According to New York State Police, a trooper pulled over a vehicle for speeding. During the stop, the troopers says the driver – later identified as 32 year old Robert Lajara – switched places with his passenger, 33 year old Gloria Rodriguez.
The trooper says both individuals were confrontational and at one point, Lajara allegedly got out of the vehicle and fled the scene, only to be picked up by Rodriguez shortly after and the vehicle then traveled east on I-86 at a high rate of speed.
A pursuit then took place with the vehicle reportedly reaching speeds of 110 miles per hour. When the vehicle finally stopped both Lajara and Rodriguez were taken into custody without incident.
Also inside the suspect vehicle were three children under the age of 16.
Rodriguez was charged with Reckless Endangerment 1st Degree, Unlawfully Fleeing a Police Officer in a Motor Vehicle 3rd Degree and Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Lajara was also charged with Endangering the Welfare of a Child and Resisting Arrest.
The two were arraigned and sent to the county jail and the children were sent to child protective services.
