MAYVILLE – A group of students in the Sherman School District avoided disaster on Thursday thanks to the quick thinking of the school bus driver.
No one was injured after flames broke out in the wheel and engine area of a Sherman school bus that was carrying a dozen students Thursday morning.
According to the Chautauqua County Sheriff Office, the incident occurred on Parker Road in the village of Mayville around 7:15 a.m. The bus driver, David Tenpas, noticed the vehicle’s brakes were experiencing problems and pulled over and 12 students were evacuated after smoke appeared in the bus. A second school bus arrived and took the students to school.
The bus eventually became engulfed by flames and firefighters with the Stanley Hose Company were called to the scene. The vehicle was totally destroyed and no injuries were reported.
