JAMESTOWN – The city has a new neighborhood watch group.
On Monday the city council approved the creation of a Neighborhood Watch program in the Front Street area of the city.
Council president Greg Rabb said that neighborhood watch groups are a benefit for the city because they help to keep the police department connected with different neighborhoods.
“The police can’t be everywhere so they appreciate neighbors keeping their eyes and ears open to know what’s going on. It’s our first line. We don’t want vigilantes, but what happens is these folks contact the police and the police stay in touch with them. They come and visit them when they have the meetings so it builds a much closer relationship between neighbors and police. That’s important too. Not only do the police need an extra set of eyes, but they also need a good working relationship and this way the police officers know the neighbors and the neighbors know the police officers. It just makes for a safer city.
There are several neighborhood watch groups throughout the city. To find out if there is one in your neighborhood and to learn more about how to establish one for your street, contact the Jamestown Citizen Police Neighborhood Watch Coalition by calling 483 – 7711.
