BEMUS POINT – While the Chautauqua County Republican Committee says it will wait until June to announce its endorsement for County Executive, a current member of the Chautauqua County Legislature is throwing his hat into the ring.
Chautauqua County Legislator Vince Horrigan – who represents Bemus Point and the Town of Ellery in District 17 – has announced his intention to run on the Republic ticket for Chautauqua County Executive. The announcement came at a Wednesday evening Chautauqua County GOP reception at Shorewood Country Club in Dunkirk.
In announcing his candidacy, Horrigan – a native of Ohio – explained that he fell in love with Chautauqua County 57 years ago. After retiring from the Air Force in 1998, Horrigan made Chautauqua County his permanent home. Since then, he’s served as a past executive director of the American Red Cross of Southwestern New York and has helped in fundraising efforts for the United Way of Southern Chautauqua County – serving as its annual campaign chair. He entered politics in 2011, running and winning the District 17 seat in the county legislature.
In a media release sent out late last night, Horrigan said Chautauqua County must have a vision for the future to determine how we will solve the challenges that we face in our individual economic circumstances and demographics. Our collective success will require building consensus around efficiency, productivity, and economic development.
Horrigan’s announcement comes less than a week after current county executive Greg Edwards, also a Republican, announced that he would not be seeking a third term in office. So far, no other candidates for the post have come forward.
