The man accused of shooting and killing the superintendent of Clymer Central School in September has pleaded not guilty to the charge of second-degree murder in Chautauqua County Court.
Anthony Robert Taglianetti II appeared before County Court Judge John Ward Wednesday morning to answer to his charge, after being extradited from Virginia earlier this week. Judge Ward set then bail for Taglianetti at $2.5 million dollars cash or a $5 million bond. The court appearance lasted less than five minutes. A premotion conference has been scheduled for January 28, 2013.
Following the hearing, public defender Ned Barone – who has been assigned to the case – expressed doubt that Taglianetti could receive a fair trial due to the high-profile, emotionally charged nature of the case. He said he was also concerned that the district attorney may have biased the case by discussing alleged facts with the media and requesting a high bail, saying “my client was not on the run.”
Police accuse Taglianetti of fatally shooting Clymer Central Schools Superintendent Keith Reed, Jr. outside Reed’s home the evening of September 21. They say Reed had a relationship with Taglianetti’s estranged, wife which precipitated the alleged murder.
Reed was identified as a suspect in the case a few days after the murder and eventually located and placed in police custody.
