ITHACA – With three tropical storms hitting the Northeast within the past year, Congressional candidates Nate Shinagawa (D-Ithaca) is promising to, if elected, put the safety of the people before politics. The Ithaca Democrat is pointing to the congressional gridlock that took place in the fall of 2011 when Tropical Storm Lee destroyed 10,000 homes in the district.
Shinagawa says lawmakers in Washington were too busy playing partisan politics and almost forced a government shutdown, instead of acting in the interest of residents to provide relief funds, and pleas from folks in need to rebuild before it got too cold.
In the end, congress voted against additional funding for the Federal Emergency Management Agency (FEMA). He said that move resulted in congress choosing the winners and losers during a natural disaster, adding that it was not the right or fair.
Shinagawa also said it was this lack of action in Congress that motivated him to run for the NY 23rd Congressional District.
This reminder that WRFA will feature both Shinagawa and Congressman Tom Reed during tonight’s Community Matters program. The candidates will respond to a series of questions we have prepared and which neither received ahead of time. The special, hour-long program will air at 6 p.m. this evening.
