WASHINGTON – Tom Reed (R-Corning) is once again throwing his support behind natural gas and how it can help the local economy in Chautauqua County.
Last week Reed’s office released a media release that cites a recent report on natural gas reserves and how they can help lower utility rates for consumers, including homeowners and manufacturers. The Corning Republican tied the report to the NRG utility plant in Dunkirk – which is currently out of commission because it is a coal-burning plant.
Reed pointed to a recent study by the Longwood Energy Group, LLC which determined that repowering the NRG facility in Dunkirk from coal to natural gas could lower electricity costs for New Yorkers by up to 5 percent. In addition, the report stated that repowering the facility will save the current jobs and add thousands more over the next ten years.
Reed said that providing more natural gas to the markets will help get the American economy moving and bring manufacturing industries back to our region.
Last week State Senator Cathy Young (R-Olean) announced that there is funding in the recently passed state budget that is earmarked for NRG to help it make the transition from being a Coal-burning plant to a natural gas powered plant.
