JAMESTOWN – Superstorm Sandy has caused the cancellation of over 300 American Red Cross blood drives and more cancellations are expected as power continues to be out in areas of the Northeast. So far, the cancellations have resulted in a shortfall of more than 9,000 blood and platelet donations across 14 states that would otherwise be available for those needing transfusions.
The Red Cross did move blood and blood products to those areas most likely to be affected by Sandy so that the blood needs of people in those communities could be met. However, the long- term impact of power outages and blood drive cancellations is expected to be significant.
To help replenish the Red Cross’s blood supply, a series of blood drives have been scheduled in Chautauqua County. In the south county, blood drives will take place on:
Nov. 7: 2 p.m. – 8 p.m.
Stanley Hose Co., Sherman
Nov. 11: 8:30 a.m. – 12:30 p.m.
First Lutheran Church Jamestown
Nov. 23: 8 a.m. – 1 p.m.
Chautauqua Mall
Nov. 29: 12 p.m. to 5 p.m.
Chautauqua Lake Central School
