ALBANY – The clean up effort continues across New York state as residents continue to sort through the damage caused by Hurricane Sandy. As of Tuesday afternoon, the death toll included 17 victims from New York state, 10 of whom were from New York City.
During a Tuesday morning press conference, Gov. Andrew Cuomo said the deaths are the worst news of the hurricane and he guesses that the death toll will continue to grow.
Cuomo also applauded the efforts of the National Guard, the state police, the NYPD. The American Red Cross is also providing disaster relief assistance to all areas affected by Hurricane Sandy.
Meanwhile, all homes in Chautauqua and Cattaraugus County should have power restored by the end of today. That’s according to a report in this monrning’s Jamestown Post-Journal, which said nearly 1000 people locally were without power Tuesday. The outages were caused by high winds and downed trees from Monday night and early Tuesday morning when Sandy began passing through the area.
The Post-Journal reports that the areas most affected with power outages were French Creek, Dutch Hollow Road in Ellery, and an area in the town of Chautauqua. An area of Clymer was also without services after high winds knocked over several utility poles. A spokesman for National Grid says any customers still without power today should have it restored by this evening.
