JAMESTOWN – The load is a little easier in the spring for the mailman. The snow-free sidewalks and warm-weather induced shorts have put a bounce in the step of many-a-letter carrier. But Saturday, May 11 that bounce will be a little more jarring due to a mail sack that’s a whole lot heavier: not with letters, but with food. Stamp Out Hunger is the nation’s largest single-day food drive, and it arrives at your mailbox the second Saturday in May.
Non-perishable food items that are donated will go to help fill food pantries at both the Salvation Army and Joint Neighborhood Project in Jamestown. Last year, over 8,700 pounds of canned soup, vegetables, meats, pasta, and cereal were collected locally. This year, they’re hoping for more.
Donated food items should be placed in a sturdy bag, no glass containers will be accepted, and the canned items should be free of any dents. Financial donations can also be made and should be in the form of a check with the memo line reading, “Stamp Out Hunger.” For more information, visit www.helpstampouthunger.com.
