ALBANY – New York state Assembly Speaker Silver is wants to bring matching public funds to state legislative elections, but that’s not sitting well with some state lawmakers.
A New York City area republican – Assemblywoman Nicole Malliotakis (R-Brooklyn, Long Island) – says it’s an absolute disgrace that Silver would want to use taxpayer dollars to fund political campaigns, at an estimated cost of $200 million. She points out that just weeks ago, the legislature passed a budget that cut programs for the developmentally disabled by $90 million, claiming that the state couldn’t afford to continue them. Malliotakis says it sends the wrong message to put political gain ahead of support for the states most vulnerable citizens.
