MAYVILLE – The man who was found guilty of infecting several Chautauqua County women with HIV during the 1990s was back in court on Wednesday. Nushawn Williams’ civil confinement trial is now underway and a jury has been selected to determine whether he can be set free.
In 1999, Williams was found guilty of knowingly infecting more than a dozen women with HIV, including a 13-year-old girl. He pleaded guilty to rape and reckless endangerment and was sentenced to 12 years in prison. After that sentence ended in 2011, he remained in state custody civil confinement law.
However, Williams attorney has stated that his client doesn’t have HIV. The State Attorney General’s Office asked for a hearing prior to jury selection to challenge the test, but the judge denied the request.
According to YNN News, all 12 jurors in the case were selected Wednesday. The alternates will be picked today. The trial will start on Monday and is expected to last a week.
