BUSTI – The mystery of the loud boom heard by residents from throughout Southern Chautauqua County has been solved. According to the Lakewood-Busti Police, the noise was caused by an unidentified 20-year-old male shooting three 6-pound boxes of Tannerite with a rifle around 6:15 p.m. Sunday. The shooting took place in a ravine near Lawson Road in the town of Busti. No charges have been filed at this time.
Tannerite is sold as two powders and can produce an exploding target when combined and shot with a rifle. Tannerite is not considered an explosive until the two ingredients are mixed and thus is not illegal to purchase. According to today’s Post-Journal, Chautauqua County Sheriff Joe Gerace says he is now considering a countywide ban of the explosive material.
