JAMESTOWN – The month of March is being celebrated as National Red Cross Month and the local chapter for Southwestern New York is doing its part to promote its services.
During March as Red Cross Month, the local agency is asking residents to recognize Everyday Heroes in the community who’ve given of themselves and in some way have helped others.
Red Cross of Southwestern New York Executive Director Bill Tucker says his agency is taking time out this month to thank the local Red Cross heroes – including volunteers, blood donors, class takers and financial supporters who have helped the agency achieve its mission.
During just the past six months the local Red Cross chapter has responded to 66 local emergencies, assisted over 100 military families and trained over 500 people in disaster preparedness. In addition, local donors have donated over 8,500 units of blood from July 2012 through January 2013.
The Red Cross is not a government agency and relies on donations of time, money and blood to do its work. An average of 91 cents of every dollar given to the Red Cross is invested in helping people in need.
The American Red Cross of Southwestern New York has a number of activities planned for Red Cross Month, including the Savor the Flavor event on March 17th from noon to 3 p.m. at the Jamestown Savings Bank Ice Arena. That event features a variety of local restaurants and businesses offering samples of their food and beverages. In addition, the day will also feature entertainment and other fundraising activities.
Tickets are just $25 apiece and can be purchased through and Red Cross board member or by calling the Jamestown office at 664-5115.
